Presidential Poets, Then & Now

Home

walt&abrahamProject Overview

This project will allow learners to explore the continued tradition of Presidents of the United States enlisting well-known poets to compose and recite specifically catered poems at Presidential Inaugurations. Within this site, learners will have the opportunity to view historical poets, their poems, and the Presidents that influenced their work. There is also the opportunity to view and listen to the poets reciting their poems at Inaugurations. Through carefully designed lessons, learners will not only view these original handwritten poems by writers dating back from the early 1800's to current, but witness editing practices by the originators. Most importantly, learners will analyze these historically written poems that captured issues, trends, goals, and political climates facing the Presidents during the time that the poem was drafted.
