The Civil Rights and Me!

Mrs. Nettie Hunt and Her Daughter on teh Steps of the Supreme Court in 1954

Project Overview

In 8th grade at Palos South all of the curriculum is wrapped around the social studies curriculum. We study the Civil Rights movement in great detail. In language arts, we read novels that support the social studies curriculum such as Warriors Don't Cry and Just Like Martin. Reading these novels, articles on the 1960's, using Library of Congress, and using the social studies text, students will write a historical fiction piece with this information. This lesson is appropriate for anyone who teaches the Civil Rights Movement and you can easily adapt the level to fit your students.
